Earlier/Current: Best known for his radio work in 1930s and his catchphrase "Can you hear me mother?" At this time he appeared (usually as himself) in a number of films and became a popular box office star. His early career as a music hall entertainer brought him into contact with Gracie Fields with whom he released a number of records. In the years 1929 to 1942 he had a solo recording career which he did in conjunction with stage work.
