Background to Production:
Written during the winter of 44-45 and finished within a week. No London theatre was available so a copy sent to Moscow where it was translated and produced in Summer of 1945. JBP saw the play performed in 7 or 8 capital cities, including Moscow, London, New York and Paris. The cast for the original London production in 1946 included Margaret Leighton, Ralph Richardson, Marian Spencer and Alec Guinness.

From the Manager's Office (Derek Coleman) starts with a quote from Anne Croft the famous musical comedy actress in an edition of Pantomime Annual in 1931! - Questioning - is the theatre dying, and should young people go on the stage. Derek Coleman relates this to the future of Chesterfield Civic Theatre and the recent new agreement negotiated between Equity and Repertory Managements. The cost of this agreement will create headaches but is not insurmountable! Ends with:- The impending dissolution of THIS Theatre may be ignored it won't happen!!
